A HUNDRED THOUSAND WELCOMES TO YOU!

A Brief History of the
Tiffin House

The Tiffin House, built by Dr. Edward Tiffin in 1787, is the oldest house in the original confines of Charles Town. Constructed of logs, it was later enlarged and faced with brick. The interior boasts fine Georgian mantles and a lovely curving staircase with a mahogany railing. Many of the original beams and boards, honed by the craftsman of the 1780's can be seen yet today. Dr. Tiffin, born in 1766 near Carlisle, England, emigrated to America 1781 along with his family to Charles Town, Virginia (Now WV). After studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, he returned to Charles Town to open his practice.

In 1798, with a letter of recommendation for public office from George Washington, Dr. Tiffin moved to the Ohio Territory and later became the states first governor.
